“This is truly accomplished music-making. There are chamber groups of longtime standing that fail to come close to this ad-hoc group’s sense of shared purpose.”—New York Times
“These young Marlboro players reminded their audience of the almost explosive joy that musicians take in sharing their exploration of chamber music. Each was a soloist; each was a thoughtful partner to the other. Together, they were exultant.”—The Philadelphia Inquirer
In the third concert of Ames Town & Gown’s 60th season, five musicians representing Musicians from Marlboro will perform on the stage of the Martha-Ellen Tye Recital Hall in Iowa State University’s Music Hall on Sunday, February 28, at 7:30 p.m. This concert marks the beginning of a partnership between Marlboro and Ames Town & Gown.
“Musicians from Marlboro” is the touring extension of the renowned Marlboro Music Festival in Vermont. Founded by Rudolf Serkin and Adolph Busch on the hilltop campus of Marlboro College in 1951, the Marlboro Music Festival brings together leading musicians from all parts of the U.S. and many foreign countries for two months each summer. Both young professionals and mature artists come to the tiny town of Marlboro to exchange ideas and explore together in depth the vast repertoire of chamber music in an informal and intimate setting. The concerts that result from these weeks of interaction have been called by Time magazine “the most exciting chamber music in the United States.” [See: “The Music Mountain; the Classical World’s Most Coveted Retreat,” The New Yorker, June 29, 2009, pp56-65.]
Typically, each tour group is built around a work performed during a prior summer that the festival’s artistic directors feel is so special that it should be shared with others around the country. The 2009-10 touring season is made up of four groups, performing throughout the United States from November through May, providing audiences the opportunity to hear a wonderful mix of repertoire and to discover young artists destined to become future musical leaders. Among the former young stars of Marlboro are cellist Yo-Yo Ma and pianist Peter Serkin.
The group coming to Ames is composed of Augustin Hadelich, violin; Karina Canellakis, violin; Romie de Guise-Langlois, clarinet; Peter Stumpf, cello; and Sebastian Krunnies, viola.
