THE GUARNERI STRING QUARTET
Saturday evening, October 7, 2000, at 7:30 p.m.

Virtually a household word, the Guarneri String Quartet needs little introduction to music lovers. The ensemble has circled the globe countless times, playing in the world's most prestigious halls on five continents; their discography is immense and their recordings are the standards to which one often compares other performances. Founded in 1964, the Quartet has just made its first personnel change, as cellist David Soyer steps down and is replaced by his former student, Peter Wiley. Mr. Wiley recently performed at a Town and Gown concert as a member of Opus One.

WORLD PREMIERE OF DARK ROSALEEN, Rhapsody on a Melody by James Joyce, FOR PIANO, VIOLIN, VIOLA, AND CELLO, BY LEE HOIBY.
Celebrate Ames Town & Gown's 50th anniversary, as well as the new millennium, at the premiere of an important new chamber work, commissioned by Town and Gown for our community's own Ames Piano Quartet. For this important project, we are honored to collaborate with Lee Hoiby, who is both internationally celebrated and familiar to central Iowa audiences. Mr. Hoiby's new work, Dark Rosaleen, is based on a melody by the great Irish author James Joyce. The commission was made possible with generous support from the Iowa Arts Council, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences of Iowa State University, and the Alvin Edgar Fund for the Performing Arts, a part of the Iowa State University Foundation.
The program will also include the Piano Quintet in F minor by Johannes Brahms, with guest violinist John Gilbert.

Portuguese pianist Alexandra Mascolo-David, whose upcoming concert schedule includes performances in Europe, Brazil, Peru, and the U.S., performs a fascinating mixture of the traditional repertoire with the evocative piano music of Portuguese composers and that of the Brazilian composer Francisco Mignone. The Washington Post writes, "a splendid pianist--refined, searching and expressive, and her playing is loaded with insight and interpretative detail." Her recording of the complete set of Mignone's 24 Valsas Brasileiras will be released on compact disc this year. A former member fo the ISU Music Department faculty, Ms. Mascolo-David is a favorite with Ames audiences.
